The castle was built in 1228 by Albert II of Tirol. The complex comprised the largely built over ring wall with Romanesque swallowtail crenellations, the keep with two semi-circular doors on the first floor, the completely ruined great hall and a second, originally freestanding residential building with a marble-framed semi-circular portal on the first floor. The chapel, standing on a steep cliff top below the castle, is of Romanesque origin; in its present-day form, however, it is largely a new construction from the early 15th century.

The frescoes in the church are currently in restoration.
