The Church of St. Prokulus in Naturns

This little church, famous for its early medieval (but also Gothic) wall paintings, was built in the mid-7th century. Archaeological excavations revealed, inter alia, the remains of a Late Roman house and a graveyard from the time of the Plague (1636). Inside, the church, which belonged to the lords of the manor, had a wooden altar rail just before the wall of the choir arch. The choir itself rises over an almost trapezoidal ground-plan and was later massively reinforced on the north and south sides. The entrance, on the south side of the church in earlier times, has been on the west side since the mid-14th century. In c. 1400 the walls of the nave were raised. The tower with coupled circular windows and a squat, masonry spire, dates back to the Romanesque era (after 1150). There is an exhibition showing the history of the church in words and pictures.
