Evengelical chruch of Stuls Bergün/Bravuogn
Site Nr. 008
Not only commercial goods were transported over the Albula Pass in the Middle Ages, there was also a cultural exchange between the north and the south. This is shown today in the small village of Stugl/Stuls, known in the 19th century for producing the best grain in Graubünden and which still has as an original station including a “Bahnhofstrasse” from the time the Albula route was opened in 1903. In this small hamlet between Bergün and Filisur stands a little church dating back to the High Middle Ages with room for only about two dozen worshippers. Its nave, a semicircular barrel vault, was completely covered with wall paintings in the 14th century. The paintings are reminiscent of those in the Arena Chapel in the North Italian town of Padua. And because the Florentine Giotto di Bondone worked there, it is conceivable that the frescoes in Stuls were executed by students of the great Giotto. The paintings fascinate the eye though their ingenious overall composition and fine colour harmonies, demonstrating the high level of Italian wall painting in the mid-14th century.
