St. George's Parish Church

Romanesque church tower with panoramic view

At an elevation of 800 m, the Church of St. George lies on a scenic hill above the South Tyrolean vineyards of Cortaccia/Kurtatsch, in the quiet environs of Corona/Graun. From its idyllic position in a clearing lined with trees, the parish church emanates a sense of tranquillity, overlooking the lush southern Etschtal Valley covered with orchards and vineyards. The church is easily accessible on foot, and just a short hike from Cortaccia.

With its portal and narrow lancet windows in the nave, St. George is a classic Gothic structure. In the valley, the well-preserved 13th Century Romanesque bell tower can be seen from afar. Outside on its west wing, is a fresco of St. Christopher, while the high Baroque altar in the church originally came from the Church of St. George in Altenburg near Caldaro/Kaltern. Adorned with various pagan symbols, the Gothic portal includes a sun disk with a five-pointed star, a vertical new moon and a palm-like penta-spout.
